Clonad Wood

Clonad is located in Co. Offaly. The site is situated approximately 5km south of the town of Tullamore between the townlands of Scrubb and Cranareen.

History

These planted forests go back to the mid-19th Century and were managed as part of the Digby Estate, although records show native forest has been in this area for centuries. It has been well managed down the decades with care given to continued health of the woods. There are some interesting species found here such as the rare and endemic Whitebeam and even Giant Redwood. Down the centuries these woods contributed greatly to the local economy as well as the biodiversity and continue to do so today.

Flora and Fauna of Clonad Woods

Pine martin, red squirrel and fallow doe have been sighted here along with Buzzard, Tree Creeper and Woodpecker. Bluebell, Wild garlic and Woodsorrel can be seen at different times throughout the year.

Fungi

Numerous species of mushrooms can be found in Clonad Woods. Our field day in September allows the community to understand the different species found here with guest experts leading the fungal foray.

Field Days

IForUT host ITGA Field Days in Clonad woodlands which facilitate forestry and local knowledge transfer. In the past, field days have focused on Management planning, scheduling felling and certification while the Forest Food & Fungal Foray field day has been hosted here annually for many years.

Along with looking at fungi, we also look at the different woodland plants and discuss environmental, wildlife and biodiversity considerations during this field day. There is a particularly wide diversity of tree and plant species found in Clonad and various environmental/conservation measures are taken in the woodlands including not employing herbicides.
